Sigiriya
Sigiriya, the Lion Rock. King Kashyapa I carved this sky-high citadel between 477 and 495 CE. It was not just a fortress, but a full royal complex with water gardens, mirror walls, and frescoes of celestial maidens that still glow with vivid colour today. The lion-paw entrance that gives the rock its name (“Sinha Giri”, meaning Lion Rock).
Getting to the top means climbing around 1,200 steps, passing vivid frescoes painted into the cliff face and a famous mirror wall etched with centuries-old poetry. The views from the summit are stunning, a sea of green jungle stretching out in every direction. Whether you love history, photography, or just a good adventure, Sigiriya is a must-visit.
